The Nashik fruit calendar — what to buy, and when

Anything is available all year now. That does not mean it is good all year.

January – February. Ber, guava, sitaphal tail-end, oranges at their peak, strawberries from Mahabaleshwar. This is the best sweet-orange season of the year.

March – May. Mango. Alphonso from mid-April, Kesar from May. Watermelon and muskmelon carry the heat. Litchi arrives late May and leaves quickly.

June – August. Monsoon. Jamun, custard-apple flowers, plums and peaches from the hills. Grapes are out of season — anything you see is cold-stored.

September – November. Sitaphal season, the short and glorious one. Pomegranate at its best. Fresh anjeer.

December. Grapes return from Nashik, oranges from Nagpur, apples still holding from Kashmir cold stores.
